About North Mayo Special Area of Conservation

Located along the rugged northwestern coast of County Mayo, Ireland, the North Mayo Special Area of Conservation encompasses a mosaic of habitats including extensive blanket bogs, wet heath, fens, upland grasslands, and important freshwater systems. This SAC covers several key ecological sites such as the Nephin Beg mountain range and extensive peatland complexes which are among the most intact and functionally significant in Western Europe. The area has been legally designated under the EU Habitats Directive of 1992 to protect its unique biodiversity and support rare species. Ecologically, the site sustains a range of rare and threatened flora and fauna, including species like the Marsh Fritillary butterfly, the Kerry Slug, and bird species such as the Hen Harrier and Merlin. The blanket bogs serve a critical role in carbon sequestration, making it vital for climate change mitigation. Visitors can experience a rich outdoors adventure including hiking through rolling hills and upland terrain, birdwatching, and exploring peatland ecosystems, although motorized access is limited to protect sensitive habitats. The remote tranquility and scenic vistas over the Atlantic coastline add to its visitor appeal, attracting naturalists and photographers especially during spring and summer months when wildflowers bloom and bird life thrives. The North Mayo SAC reflects both natural beauty and ecological importance, underscoring Ireland's commitment to environmental conservation while offering a rewarding wilderness experience.
